Shop Smart

Finally, no more boots and snowsuits. We thought the day would never come, but it has and we need some retail therapy to help us celebrate in style. This spring, we have found two local shops that can help us do that in eco-style. Why not save the planet at the same time?

The demand for organic children’s clothing is on the rise, and why wouldn’t it be? Organically farmed cotton and wool is better for everyone. Chickpea Boutique carries lots of fun knits including sweet little organic hats, dresses, sweaters (and sweater vests, so cute!) by a number of different designers including nui organics, egg by susan lazar, and Lillybee. A few of their products are good for the home too. Check out Chick Pea’s Siliskin covers—the fun and funky grippers for glass baby bottles. And what about some colourful bamboo bowls and utensils by bambu? They please the senses and the earth with their beautiful colours and sustainable materials. Reasonably priced at $14.95 and $7.95, they fit in your hand “just so”. In fact, we might just buy some for ourselves. Savvymom Subscriber Special: Chick Pea is offering 10% off any clothing, decor and diaper bags until May 31, 2008. Just print off this page and bring it into the store.

Half “new stuff” and half consignment clothing (great for the environment and the pocketbook!), Belly Laughs is our favourite new children’s shop in Kanata. There’s really something for everyone here, from nursing mothers, to wee babies and even their “big” brothers and sisters. We love the new Kalencom Diaper Bags (stylish, roomy, and easy to keep clean), the PEPPA bonding doll (a wonderful first doll, and it’s organic and fair trade) and we can’t help but have a soft spot for Sophie the Giraffe (made of natural rubber and phthalate-free), and their line of miYim organic toys. Savvymom Subscriber Special: Belly Laughs is offering Savvy readers 10% off until May 31, 2008. Enter promo code ‘savvy’ or print off this page and bring it into the store.

So no guilt on this expedition. Now you know that shopping can be good for the environment too.
