Calgary in September

Of all the months of the year, I’d have to say, September is my favourite. The weather is gorgeous, the leaves are beginning to change, there’s pumpkin spice everywhere, and there is so much to do in Calgary!

There’s still time to enjoy activities outdoors (like Beakerhead, Applefest and the Heritage Balloon Festival), and there are plenty of indoor events to explore, too (think Monster Trucks and Art Gallery visits). We’ve got a roundup of ten awesome activities in Calgary to mark on your calendar this September – which ones are on your list!?

Cirque du Soliel: Luzia

Shows until September 22
Under the Big Top, Stampede Park (Lot #6)

Almost everyone has heard of Cirque du Soliel and their incredibly stunning performances, but have you had the chance to actually see one? Luzia is described as “A waking dream of Mexico”, and includes surreal visuals involving light and water as well as out-of-this-world acrobatic performances. Various sets, characters, and stunts will keep you at the edge of your seat in this family-friendly performance.

Rotary RibFest

September 6, 7 & 8
Corner of Olympic way and 14th AVE SE

If you’ve got a special place in your heart for all things barbecue, you won’t want to miss what’s cookin’ at Rotary RibFest. Enjoy delicious BBQ ribs from 5 of the best teams on the North American RibFest circuit and watch them go head to head as celebrity judges determine the best-tasting ribs on Sunday at 1:30. The licensed park will also have live entertainment, treats for the kids, desserts, and a family zone. Admission is free, and donations to the Rotary Clubs of Calgary Chinook and Centennial projects are gratefully accepted.

Monster Jam

September  7 – 8 – Gates open at 2 pm, Event begins at 3 pm
1410 Olympic Way SE

If you thought watching cowboys and horses at the Stampede was exciting, just wait until you see the newest guests set to speed around the Saddledome! 8 gigantic monster trucks, including the ever-popular “Grave Digger” will be showing their stuff as they race and perform freestyle stunts like driving and flipping over ramps and old cars. Kids and adults alike are guaranteed to have a good time at this one-of-a-kind event!

Heritage Park Harvest Sale

September 7 – 8 from 10 am – 5 pm
1900 Heritage Drive SW

In case you needed an excuse to buy delicious, fresh, and cheap produce, Heritage Park and The Calgary Produce Marketing Association will be hosting their Annual Fall Harvest Sale to help raise money for the Alberta Children’s Hospital Foundation, Community Kitchen Program, and the Heritage Park Society. Products vary depending on the summer’s growing conditions, but potatoes, cabbage, carrots, beets, apple, bananas, tomatoes and more are what you can expect to find at this tasty event!

This Girl Can Expo

September 14 from 10 am – 5 pm
1801 Big Four Trail SE E

This is an event just for the girls! Created by two mothers of tween girls with a focus on wellness, safety and support, arts and design, science and technology, fashion and sports, girls aged 5+ won’t want to miss this chance to check out the huge variety of opportunities, products and information available to them, all under one roof. Speakers will be onsite to inspire and encourage youngsters as they bring messages from a variety of backgrounds including fitness, entrepreneurism, nutrition, mental health and more. There will also be tons of unique and fun exhibitors on site offering everything from products to experiences and classes. There’s so much to take in at the This Girl Can Expo!

Moonlight Market

September 14 from 3 pm – 10 pm
Riverfront Lane SE & C-Square, East Village

With fall weather bringing chillier temperatures, your chance to visit an outdoor night market is beginning to dwindle! Luckily, the 3rd Annual Moonlight Market will be taking place in the East Village on September 14 from 3-10 pm. With both food and drinks priced under $8, you’ll want to come hungry so you can try a bite (and sip) of everything. Over 30 artists and vendors will have plenty of beautiful goods up for sale in addition to the incredible food lineup!

September 18 – 22
Venues and times for events vary

Beakerhead is an event that describes itself as “outlandish”, which is absolutely the best word they could have chosen. If you’re looking to explore a fantastical world of art, engineering, design, inventors, scientists and performers, this incredible event is a must-visit. Whether you want to craft your own kombucha, escape the Locked Library, visit outer space or check out over 20 different installations including a fire-breathing dragon, an LED light display in the sky, a field of glowing orbs and adorably awesome inflatables, Beakerhead has something for everyone.

Calgary Artwalk

September 21 – 22
Various galleries throughout inner Calgary, downtown, Inglewood and the Beltline

The Calgary Artwalk is back for its 36th year! This free event invites Calgarians to enjoy the city’s visual art scene, where they can visit dozens of venues around the city to take tours, hear artist talks, view exhibitions and try out workshops. You can make your artwalk look however you’d like since a lot of the timing is flexible, but check the website for event listings and times so that you don’t miss any scheduled events! Participating galleries include the Apik Art Gallery, the Dade Loft, the Glenbow Museum, Inglewood Fine Arts, Mckinley Burkart, and more.

Apple Fest

September 21 – 22
226066 112th Street West, Foothills, AB

If the juicy crunch of an apple is something that makes your mouth water, you won’t want to miss AppleFest at Granary Road. Tons of apple-themed activities and games will keep visitors to this fun and unique outdoor adventure park busy, and many of the vendors at the market will be offering apple-themed food and gifts. Kids won’t be able to resist a visit to the active learning park with plenty of fun structures to climb up, slide down and run across. The orchard tree house is sure to be a hit during the celebration of all things apple. There are some pretty adorable animals to visit at Granary Road as well (our favourite are the goats)!

This event is one that our family looks forward to every single year. There is something so totally magical about hot air balloons, and if you’re willing to drive out to High River, you can have the opportunity to see them up close! There are a variety of weather-dependent events, including balloon launches, balloon rides, and (our favourite) – Balloon Glow Night. Starting at 5:00 on Friday, September 27 on Adams/Mercer Land at the west end of Macleod Trail, pilots will inflate their balloons using their burners, making them look like giant colourful light bulbs. The balloons don’t actually take off, but instead, fill up the field where you and your family can walk amongst them (and even step inside one). It’s an event you definitely won’t forget!

Are you as excited for fall in Calgary as I am? Which of these events will you and your family be attending? Did we miss any great ones? We’d love to hear them in the comments!
