Bag That

LunchBag

It’s 9:00 p.m. and the kids are asleep. You could a) watch Grey’s b) read a book c) enjoy a quiet glass of wine or no, wait—the lunches!

Some days (OK, most days) preparing the lunches feels like running a race. By the time you finish the first lap, it’s time to start the second and the clock is always ticking. It’s time to come up with another school lunch that your kids will eat. And since the days of coming home from school for lunch seem to be old-school now, lunches have actually become more complicated for moms. They now need to be healthy, tasty, fun, innovative, interesting, portable and allergen-free just so kids will eat them and schools will accept them

Sound easy? Not so much (and even worse on day 167, 168, 169… this year).

The Lunch Bags (and yes, they do call themselves “the bags”) Colette Smithers and Brenda Koroknai are actually a couple of really nice moms that decided to up the ante on the brown bag lunch. Luckily for us, they want to share.

The Lunch Bags will deliver a healthy nutritious lunch right to your kid’s school all labeled and ready to go. The menu changes daily and consists of four parts: a sandwich, a fruit or veggie, a sweet homemade treat and a healthy drink. Families are given the set menu at the beginning of each month so kids know what to expect.

We tested one of The Lunch Bag’s lunches on an active five year-old (of the non-eater variety). After peeking inside the plain brown bag we found a pizza wrap, iced carrot muffin, juice and homemade apple sauce.

The result: our test subject said he wanted to eat pizza wraps for the rest of his life!

The food comes from their brightly lit kitchen in south-east Calgary. It’s brand new, custom built to commercial code and regularly health inspected. The food prep area is also nut free. The Lunch Bags currently services McKenzie Lake, McKenzie Towne and Mountain Park and plans for expansion are on the books.

Lunches costs less than $5 per day with discounts for siblings or long-term subscriptions. (There is a one month minimum.)

So take the boring out of that brown bag—and get back to McDreamy.
