Ottawa: The Savvy Guide to April 2015

SavvyMom January 11, 2017

It’s time to dust off those bicycles and say hello to your neighbours. Spring is finally here. Here’s how to welcome the new season!

Make Earth Day the focus of your spring cleaning. Gather outgrown toys and clothes and pass them on to a family with younger kids, or donate them to a local charity.
Why? The house will feel fresh, organized and ready for spring, and with the incentive of going for the season’s first ice cream cone once the work is done, you’re sure to get everyone on board.

To the Hometown Hockey Tour in Kanata on Sunday, April 5 at 6:30 pm
Why? Because it’s the ultimate hockey experience for any fan, with NHL alumni among the guests and Ron MacLean hosting a live broadcast. There will also be an NHL game viewing party, activities, prizes and giveaways.

Adorable new umbrellas
Why? April showers are so much easier to take from underneath a stylish and reliable umbrella. We love this horse one or this firefighter one for the kids, and this pretty but sturdy birdcage-style one for you.

Why? Because after a long winter, it’s so much fun to bust out the sidewalk chalk and kick it old school with playground games from back in the day.

Hoopla Digital
Why? Because they’re calling it ‘Netflix for libraries.’ Hoopla Digital is a free online and mobile service that allows library-card holders to stream thousands of movies, TV shows, videos, music and audiobooks. And the company just announced a partnership with Disney, adding 100 classic movies to mix.

A Ticket Around The World by Natalia Diaz and Melissa Owens with your kids
Why? Because this engaging picture book offers a fun way to learn about geography and culture, told through the adventures of a boy who visits friends in 13 countries. It’s beautifully illustrated and covers everything from capital cities to favourite foods.

Why? Because we’ve been spending way too much time just sorting out the logistics of pick-ups, playdates and piano lessons. This free new calendar app is designed by techie moms to help parents keep track of events like those birthday parties and dentist appointments that can throw your schedule into chaos. We’re especially fond of the map view that shows you everywhere you’ve got to be during your day. Available through both iTunes and Google Play.

By making simple energy-efficient upgrades at home
Why? Coupons on LED bulbs and other energy-saving products (think ceiling fans and racks for hang drying laundry) make it easier to afford the changes that are good for both you and your energy bills. Go to for a list of participating retailers.

A simple arrangement of spring flowers and branches
Why? Because it’s such an easy way to brighten your home and set the mood for Easter and beyond.

Raise money and awareness for the fight against cancer and the Canadian Cancer Society by buying a daffodil pin this month
Why? Because money raised during Daffodil Month helps local patients living with cancer and their families. Donations fund life-saving research, support services and other important work that means fewer Canadians will be touched by the disease.
