Moms know that the new year really begins in September. This month is all about fresh starts and new beginnings. Here’s our guide to making the most of this exciting time of year.
Squeeze every last ounce of fun out of summer. Make a plan for a family adventure, whether it be catching the Ex while it’s still in town, going for a family walk and scavenger hunt, or setting aside a Saturday for apple picking.
Why? September can get crazy, and it always goes by in a flash. Take the time to slow down and enjoy an outing as a family.
To September Weekends at the Scarborough Museum, Saturdays and Sundays from 12–4 pm
Why? The museum educates families about life in early Scarborough—come out and see how the neighbourhood has changed. There will also be seasonal baked treats to nibble, crafts for kids to make, and a park to explore. Admission is pay-what-you-can.
Yourself a backpack, too
Why?…should the kids have all the fun? Shiny new school gear is exciting! Backpacks for adults are trendy now, so set aside your oversized tote and pick up this chic leather pack—we love the deep, rich burgundy colour. Your shoulders and back will rejoice.
Why? It’s like an encyclopedia—only just for kids and way more fun. It’s all illustrated and organized by topic and subtopic—so kids can easily browse on their own and search for their favourite things—from dinosaurs to trains to the human brain.
The Disney Channel
Why? Because all of your kids’ favourite shows, like Mickey Mouse Clubhouse and Girl Meets World, are now available in Canada all in one place. Watch for the Disney Channel app, too, launching later this month, for access to on-demand episodes.
The ‘Me Me Me’ Epidemic: A Step-by-Step Guide to Raising Capable, Grateful Kids in an Over-Entitled World by Amy McCready
Why? Because it can be tough for kids to understand that the world doesn’t revolve around them. Not only do we spend all our waking hours taking them places, our culture celebrates naval-gazing in all its selfie-stick-wielding ways. In this new book, parenting expert Amy McCready outlines how to cultivate healthy attitudes in our kids by setting limits and training them in responsible behaviour. Read it this month and use the return to school to establish some new expectations.
Why? September tends to bring organization to the forefront of our to-do lists—and we’re loving this new app from Immunize Canada. Spend a little time entering the details of your family’s immunization records, and you’ll receive appointment reminders, find out when a vaccine is due, and get alerts of outbreaks near you. So much better than that little yellow card at the back of your junk drawer.
By shopping eco-friendly and non-toxic diapers, baby products and household cleaners from the Honest Company
Why? Because their products are now available at Indigo and Well.ca. Arrivederci, shipping fees.
Kids waiting for adoption find their forever families by participating in FUNWALK on September 20 in Riverdale Park from 11 am–3 pm
Why? Because the money raised goes to the Adoption Council of Ontario, which works to find waiting children—currently there are 7,000 in Ontario alone—a permanent home. Money raised at FUNWALK goes to the ACO’s many initiatives, including clinical support via social workers and education programs for families. Preregister online or on the day of the event to take part in the walk, or just show up on the day of to enjoy the carnival-style games, prizes, face painting, henna tattoos, BBQ lunch, midway foods, a magician, DJ, live music and more.
