Cooked over a campfire or sizzling in a frying pan, this delicious and easy breakfast Bannock recipe can really accompany any meal.

Bannock is a simple bread that is a staple in many diets. Irish or Scottish Bannock is often made with oats. It is a wonderful accompaniment with St. Patrick’s Day dinner.

The Indigenous form of Bannock typically uses corn or nut meal and includes the addition of nuts and seeds. Making Bannock with your kids is one activity you can do to acknowledge Truth and Reconciliation Day.

Easy Breakfast Bannock Recipe:

 

You’ll Need

  • 2 cups flour
  • 2 Tbsp baking powder
  • 2 Tbsp sugar
  • ½ tsp salt
  • Water
  • Cooking oil
  • 1 cup any combination of the following: dried cranberries, pecans, raisins, blueberries, coconut, walnuts, sunflower or pumpkin seeds

Prep and Cook

  • Combine the dry ingredients together and add enough water to form dough
  • Drop dollops of dough into a hot, well–oiled pan and fry until golden brown
    Alternatively, wrap the dough around a stick and roast over the open fire
  • Serve with preserves or chunks of cheese
